International politics: Russia, Great Britain, the Eastern Question, the Crimean War, Revolutionary Spain
This is the first Italian complete version of Marx and Engels’ writings in the twelve-month period from February, 1854 to February, 1855, dealing with international politics – Russia, Great Britain, the Eastern Question, the Crimean War, and the revolution in Spain. The book comprises 113 articles, or “letters”, that fall into the so-called “journalism” of Marx and Engels, and were mostly published in the New-York Tribune. After the 1848 revolution, their exile to London, and the arrest of the Cologne communists, Marx and Engels lost the opportunity to defend their views in a press organ of their own. In that period, in Summer 1851, Marx was invited to submit some articles to the Tribune, a newspaper backing the American left-wing whigs. Accepting this task meant therefore both earning a living and taking part in the political debate. Beyond the “journalist” character of these writings, Marx and Engels’ accuracy and consciousness in compiling their articles gave these latter – as Franz Mehring wrote – “imperishable value” and produced “mostly unexplored treasures”. |
