La battaglia mondiale dell'acciaio |
World Competition in the Steel Industry |
This book presents a review of the battles in the world steel industry, while the chapter on the big restructuring processes occurring in this sector is now being written in China. To raise one’s eyes to the world is the only way to perceive the real horizon of the working class’s struggles. Even the defensive battle for the immediate class interests in the European steel industry cannot but start from a global view. Europe has engaged in a battle for competitiveness in order to withstand the clash of international capitals. The European battle over Ilva, fought by the consortium led by the giant company ArcelorMittal and the Italian companies grouped around AcciaItalia, or the interest shown by ThyssenKrupp for the English and Dutch TataSteel plants are only the latest episodes in the long process of concentration of the steel industry in Europe – a decades-long process that accelerated during the restructuring crisis in the 1970s and then continued under the pressure of European imperialism’s political unification, which was quickened in its turn by China’s rise. |
